Teaching Fellows Senior Conference
As I sit down to the computer to draft this latest blog, I reflect upon the past blessings my life has been filled with. Without the North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarship program I do not know if I would have chosen education as a career path. I do not know that I would have even been able to attend UNCW and earn my Undergraduate degree without the scholarship. I am more thankful now to this unique program than I ever have been before in my professional career.
This last weekend I was able to participate in the Senior Conference as a facilitator and was able to have my batteries recharged by the energy and enthusiasm these young people have for the noblest of careers. I was assigned to Group J, a collection of music, drama, theatre, and vocal majors from elementary to high school level. I would be amiss if I did not quote Josh and state unequivocally that, “Group J is the best group ever!” In the beginning, I was a little worried. I know nothing about their curriculum and was worried how I would even identify with these kids. These worries, as are most concerns one cannot control, were wasted effort. Spending time with these kids discussing financial concerns, discipline issues, and other first year teacher concerns was an extremely motivating experience. I can honestly say that these fabulous fifteen really helped to recharge my batteries and spark that excitement I feel for my calling. To these young educators to be, I extend my heartfelt thanks and an open invitation to be called upon with any questions, concerns, or items to discuss. As you enter the classrooms, know that the students you lead need you. Please know that everyone feels that nervous apprehension, but you are educated, trained, and prepared to master any situation. Please feel free to let me know any way I can be of assistance to you.
Ron Clark, the 2001 Disney National Teacher of the Year, provided an inspiring message to the group as well as Mr. Jason Kamras, 2005 National Teacher of the Year. Though very different in their presentation styles both these gentlemen brought a message of the importance of educators and the difference they can make to their children they serve.
One of the personal highlights of the weekend for me was to be there with a young lady who attended EWMS while I was teaching there. I did not have Chye as a student, but she was frequently a guest in the Mobile Mansion and her little brother TD provided me more opportunities to interact with their family. It is inspiring to know that such an exceptional young lady is headed into our classrooms this coming year.
On a more local note I received an email from Stephanie Bossolono today letting me know she was taking a position in Rocky Mount. Mrs. Bossolono was an asset at NMS and she will be missed. The kids in Rocky Mount are all the luckier to have her energy and enthusiasm in their classrooms. I wish her the best in her new school and will miss her pleasant personality and caring smile.
