Folk Tales

bound feet.jpg

Over the last several days we have read some folk tales from around the world and learned a lot about cultures we are unfamiliar with. The People Could Fly is an African American folk tale that dates back to the days of slavery and teaches a lesson about not giving up and freedom. We read two different versions of the Cinderella story one from China and one a Native American tale. These stories provided us with an insight into a common story told from multiple perspectives. We also learned a little about the binding of the feet that was practiced in China. Today we added to these tales with two very short stories from Sweden and Syria.

In Social Studies we are working our way through Africa south of the Sahara and learning a whole lot about war diamonds and poverty. Even though some of us are not in possession of as much as we want, we are not suffering like so many people from this area of the world. I think it really struck the kids the number of people in southern Africa who have died or are infected by HIV/AIDS. Bono said, “This is the greatest moral dilemma of our generation.” The average in southern Africa is a staggering 20% infection rate with the numbers climbing to an unimaginable 33% in some areas.

All of our Field Trip arrangements are made and we are so excited to be going to Myrtle Beach on Tuesday. It is going to be an adventure and I think the kids (and adults) will really enjoy it. Be sure we will take plenty of pictures and I will have them posted up here as soon as I can when we return.

It would stink to have feet like that because then your feet would look very ugly. Your feet would be hurting all the time. I'm glad that my feet are not like that. I feel sorry for all those people with their feet all folded up.

When woman tie up there feet it is really nasty because it like mounts there toes together and they look like a hand is on them. They're very disgusting to me.

I think that it's wierd that the Chinese made their feet look like that. It's just gross.:)

I think that the binding of feet is gross! I know that it must hurt their feet because wearing a pair of shoes that are too small hurts really bad!

The two Cinderella stories we read were a lot different from the Cinderella that I am familar with. I thought that it was really neat comparing and contrasting them today!

I know it has to hurt to bound your feet, I don't know how they can walk. I am so ready to go on your field trip on Tuesday.

When we learned about folk tales, we looked at binding of the feet. It is nasty. I know a long time ago in China women and girls are binding feet, but I never see what is it look like. I learn a lot of things in the folk tales.

It is different how some women make themselves beautiful to the men in there country but the ways that we make ourselves beautiful may be just as different to them as it is to us.

I think that we should do somthing about AIDS and HIV in South Africa.

I think that it is nasty to have feet like that. It must really hurt and take a very long time to get your feet like that.

Firstly I don’t really fully understand why binding of feet happened. Why did these people start the tradition in the first place? Especially because it is such an agonizing practice. I thought that it would have been banned earlier than when it was in 1911 but obviously not.

Chiao Shih Wang must be a strong person considering all the pain she has been through and the probably stressful arranged marriage. But she has lived to 100 and is still happy and healthy which is pretty cool.

Since she has never been educated at school I suppose learning a new language when moving to Australia must be very hard so she has done well to learn any considering she doesn’t even probably know everything in her own language.

Chiao Shih Wang is very lucky that she has a good family to look after her because otherwise she would most likely be a lonely old lady in China. So in this way with the Chinese tradition being that her children have to look after her it has worked and been on her side as opposed to the feet binding law.

It was the mother’s choice on weather her daughter was going to have her feet bound and if she did she had a higher chance of marriage. I think this is silly because the woman’ feet in my opinion look far more demented when bound and not at all elegant so by foot binding they look unnatural and I don’t think that really men would want their wife to have such ugly feet even though it was seen as a good thing.

I think it would have been nicer if the child was able to make the decision (knowing all the facts from both sides) weather they wanted to have their feet bound.

Remember people, that was a different culture. Binding of the feet was looked upon as a status symbol. Binding the feet made one basically a cripple, dependant upon others. Kinda like the 'white elephant' thinking. To have a wife who was totally dependant upon you was a status symbol and this digressed into the tract that the smaller the feet, the more helpless the woman, the more dependant. I don't condone the action but merely wanted to help expand the view :)

yeah you guys might think its gross but u guys are just giving your opinions. i read about many feet binding in my life (im only12) and all of the storys included that all the women never wanted their feet like that!!!!! they were forced to bound their feet beacause it was the sake of their "arranged" marrige. you may ask "why would the men only marry ladys with small bound feet?" well since it was an arranged marridge they had to marry the girl, and if she didnt have bound feet then it was called a unfemine women, and she was manly-is (i think thats what you call it lol), and no men wants to be called "the guy was a half men wife. theres your explanation of "bound feet".
