Learn and Serve Grant
Great News for the Tech Kids at Norwayne Middle School - They have been selected as a Best in Program recipient for the State of North Carolina Learn and Serve Grant through the State Department of Public Instruction.
The grant was originally written to purchase repair equipment and upgrade parts to make the neccessary upgrades to computers donated by Interim Healthcare out of Wilson, NC. In conjuction with Alvin Phillips, their Director of Information Services, we were able to teach the Tech Kids how to troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade equipment.
The State of North Carolina values the return on their $2,000 grant at well over $18,500. The Tech Kids have provided a tremedous service to the faculty and staff of Norwayne Middle School.
E. Urner Goodman once wrote, "He who serves his fellows, is of all his fellows greatest." These students have learned and served, and have a tremendous amount to be proud of. You don't hear it enough, but from the entire faculty and staff at NMS -
"THANK YOU!"

Great job on the grant - the kids deserve all the recognition.
Activities like these are essential to any successful use of technology in schools. While the public and elected officials are quick to provide funding for hardware and software purchase, they forget that training, maintenance and a steady focus are far more important.
Just as you can't buy seeds to cast carelessly in your back yard with expectations of a bountiful harvest, our schools must find creative ways to effectively use the tech they have been provided with. The "democratic" placement of one computer on every teacher's desk will do little to foster student learning.
Congratulations, and deepest regrets that you won't be able to continue with phase 2 of the project.
